The Jogeshwari caves  are located in the eastern part of this suburb. They are some of the earliest Hindu caves in the region and are dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva & Goddess Jogeshwari . The suburb is named after the Goddess. It is said they are older than the  Elephanta Caves . The Jogeshwari caves are currently in a very poor condition as they are used for drying clothes and as toilets by the surrounding slum population.
